Fuel Prices Surge Again: Petrol Up by Rs3.40, Diesel by Rs6.72

In a recent move that is set to impact consumers significantly, the government has announced an increase in fuel prices, with petrol rising by Rs3.40 per litre and high-speed diesel (HSD) increasing by Rs6.72 per litre.

This adjustment, effective from September 10, brings the new retail price of petrol to Rs367.75 per litre and HSD to Rs392.67 per litre. Notably, the government continues to impose heavy taxes, with Rs114 per litre on petrol and Rs100 per litre on diesel.

Historical Context of Price Changes

The price of high-speed diesel has seen a decline from its record high of Rs520.35 on April 3, which followed a steep rise beginning at Rs281 per litre amid geopolitical tensions stemming from the US-Iran conflict. Similarly, petrol prices peaked at Rs458.41 on April 3 after climbing from Rs266 in early March.

Daily Price Adjustments Ahead

Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik announced changes to the pricing structure on July 17, stating that fuel prices would now be adjusted daily due to the volatile nature of international markets. This shift follows a period of weekly price updates since March, as the government aimed to manage fuel conservation amid anticipated disruptions in oil supply. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) has been tasked with determining these prices based on current market trends.

The changes in fuel prices hold significant implications for various sectors, particularly for the middle and lower-middle classes who primarily rely on petrol for personal transport. Likewise, diesel price fluctuations affect the broader public, as it is essential for heavy transport and power generation.
