Fuel Prices Surge as Government Implements New Increases

By Editor • September 8, 2026 • 1 min read

In a significant move, the government announced on Tuesday a hike in fuel prices, with petrol climbing by Rs5.58 per litre and high-speed diesel (HSD) increasing by Rs4.18 per litre. These adjustments mean that petrol will now be priced at Rs364.35 per litre, while HSD will retail at Rs385.95 per litre. The new prices will take effect on September 9, as stated in the Petroleum Division’s notification.

The rise in diesel prices marks a notable decrease from a high of Rs520.35 recorded on April 3, after which prices began to ascend from Rs281 per litre due to escalating tensions related to the US-Iran conflict. Similarly, petrol prices peaked at Rs458.41 on April 3, starting from Rs266 in early March.

Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik revealed that the decision to adjust fuel prices daily stems from the volatility in international markets, a shift from the previously used weekly updates initiated in March. This decision aims to provide more timely adjustments in response to changing global conditions. The minister also highlighted that the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) will now oversee these daily price adjustments based on international trends. Fuel price changes are particularly impactful for the middle and lower-middle classes, affecting private transport and heavy transport sectors alike.
