Government Adjusts Fuel Prices Amid Global Oil Surge

By Editor • September 11, 2026 • 1 min read

The government has announced a hike in fuel prices, with petrol increasing by Rs5.02 per litre and high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs5.28 per litre. The new prices will be effective from September 12 to September 14, bringing petrol to Rs375.82 per litre and HSD to Rs403.32 per litre.

This adjustment comes as the government continues to impose significant taxes, with Rs114 per litre on petrol and Rs100 per litre on diesel. These rates reflect ongoing volatility in the global oil market, influenced by geopolitical tensions, particularly the conflict between the US and Iran.

Historically, HSD prices peaked at Rs520.35 on April 3, while petrol reached its highest at Rs458.41 on the same day. The fluctuations in prices have prompted the Petroleum Minister, Ali Pervaiz Malik, to shift the price-setting mechanism to a daily basis, allowing for more responsive adjustments to international market conditions. This change aims to alleviate the financial burden on consumers, particularly those in the middle and lower-middle classes who rely on petrol for transportation.
